Out with the old, in with the new
When my old flatbed scanner started to die, I decided that it was time to upgrade to a more mobile unit. I had looked at the Brother DSmobile® 600 many times, but by the time I was in “shopping mode,” Brother had replaced that model with the DSmobile® 620. I, for one, am glad they did.
Unchained
I had recently unchained myself from my office and began working in coffee shops, shared workspaces, and at home, so I needed something that would easily fit into my messenger bag and not weigh me down as I bicycle to work.
I also needed to be sure that the scanner was fast and reproduced the same quality as my old flatbed. I chose the Brother DSmobile® 620 Document Scanner, and after six months of use, I’m impressed.
Versatility
Another important feature that I required was versatility. I work as a web designer and search engine marketer and I needed a scanner that would work with all three of my computers, running OSX, Ubuntu, and Windows 7. The DSmobile® 620 did not disappoint.
While other scanners boast that they can scan more pages per minute, the DSmobile 620 clocks in at a respectable 8 pages per minute, both in color and black and white. I didn’t find this to be much of a drawback at all, though if I were scanning hundreds of pages at a time, it could have become burdensome.
Software
This scanner software allowed me to scan directly to a variety of file locations, most importantly via FTP. The ability to scan dozens of photos and documents, and have them available to my team within a few minutes is extremely convenient, and saves me the hassle of having to email someone each time a new file is available. They just know. I’m considering purchasing a few of these for each of my field team for the FTP upload alone.

Power Source
The Brother DSmobile 620 can operate via both USB power, and included AC adapter. It also weighs less than one pound and conveniently fits in my messenger bag. This makes it the perfect option for someone who doesn’t work in the same location constantly.
The only drawback I’ve encountered thus far is the Brother DSmobile is only a single-sided scanner, though it would likely be much larger and heavier as a duplex scanner, negating some of it’s best features.
To sum up
If you’re looking to take your office on the road, or simply looking for a home scanner with a small footprint and a respectable feature set, the Brother DSmobile 620 Document Scanner is an affordable choice that won’t disappoint.
